LOGISTICS & TRANSPORT
The fatigue risk your driving rosters aren't showing you.
DVSA enforcement is intensifying and tachograph compliance only tells you about driving time, not recovery. RosterWise surfaces the ghost shifts that look compliant on paper but leave drivers cognitively impaired behind the wheel.
REGULATORY PRESSURE
Where the logistics & transport sector sits under DVSA scrutiny.
| Regulation | Requirement | Enforcer |
|---|---|---|
| EC 561/2006 | Daily and weekly driving time limits, minimum daily and weekly rest periods, mandatory breaks. | DVSA |
| Working Time (Road Transport) Regulations 2005 | 48-hour average working week, night work restrictions, periods of availability rules. | DVSA / HSE |
| Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (s.2) | General duty to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety of employees — including managing fatigue risk. | HSE |
FATIGUE BY THE NUMBERS
What the logistics & transport evidence base shows.
20%
of accidents on major roads in Great Britain involve driver fatigue (HSE)
£40bn
annual cost of insufficient sleep to the UK economy (RAND Europe, 2016)
11h
the statutory daily rest period — often inadequate once commute and sleep latency are accounted for
GHOST SHIFT EXAMPLE
A common logistics & transport pattern that hides in plain sight.
A driver finishes a delivery run at 22:00 and is rostered to start again at 09:00 — an 11-hour rest period that is fully compliant with EC 561/2006 daily rest rules. On paper, the roster is clean. In reality, the driver has a 45-minute commute home, settles around 23:30, sleeps from roughly 00:00 to 06:30 (interrupted), and has a 45-minute commute back to the depot. Effective sleep opportunity: under 6 hours. Add a circadian low point between 02:00 and 06:00 and the driver starts their next shift with a cognitive performance deficit equivalent to being over the drink-drive limit. RosterWise flags this as a ghost shift before the wheel turns.
HOW ROSTERWISE HELPS
Built for the operational realities of logistics & transport.
- Tachograph-aware roster analysis — RosterWise reads working time alongside driving time so the picture matches reality, not just the paper trail.
- Ghost shift detection on every driver, every week, with the inadequate-recovery patterns ranked by predicted risk.
- DVSA audit-ready evidence trail: timestamped fatigue risk assessments and documented interventions for every roster published.
- Aggregate compliance dashboards for transport managers and depot directors — no individual driver scores exposed.
- Confidential driver coaching through the mobile app, so the people on the road get personalised advice without their data going to the employer.
- Integration with leading TMS and scheduling platforms used across UK haulage and parcel networks.
